Home Automation: What it is and How it Works

When it comes to home automation perhaps there are few who know in detail what it is about. In fact, there are different technologies that allow us to make our home intelligent, obtaining similar results but in different ways.

Home automation means home automation and includes all the systems and devices that improve the comfort and efficiency of the home. The traditional home automation solution includes functions integrated and wired in the electrical system, which can be managed from a single app or from a single touch screen display.

To allow this, if the electrical system of the house is not already prepared to become home automation (as is usually the case for new buildings), or does not have certain characteristics, structural changes of a certain importance may be necessary.

What are the advantages of “wired” home automation? It covers all the functions of your home, from comfort to safety, through audio/video management, can integrate solutions from different manufacturers for complete customization, guarantees total control of your home even remotely, with continuous monitoring of consumption.

Technology, efficiency and comfort become the values of a home automation, which can become fully automated thanks to the integration of several functions. In winter, for example, in a home automation you can set a scenario in which at 17 o’clock: the lights of the driveway of the house are turned on, the heating of the rooms is adjusted to 22 degrees, all the shutters are lowered, the washer-dryer starts.

Smart products are an alternative solution to traditional home automation for the management of an intelligent home, although they offer fewer possibilities for integration between systems and customization of scenarios. In this case, the objects are often independent of each other because each performs a specific function (e.g. a smart thermostat) and communicate via wifi.

They are generally controllable via smartphones or smart speakers (Google Home, Alexa, Apple HomePod) with dedicated apps. Unlike traditional home automation, opting for a smart solution, the wiring is often null, and it is also guaranteed the ability to control lights, shutters, video door phone, thermostat and electrical outlets in the house (with its control of consumption).

Compared to a home automation system, however, not all functions and devices can be fully integrated with each other, and therefore their management may require the use of more dedicated apps. For example, in a smart home you could have an app for controlling lights, shutters and electrical sockets, another for managing the thermostat, another for the video door phone. Even if solutions such as IFTTT already allow you to automate functions between different Apps that apparently cannot be integrated (e.g. if Weather Station signals rain then close the shutters).

To have an intelligent home with smart products, all you need is simple technologies that are already part of our daily lives: an internet connection, a smartphone, possibly a smart speaker, a connected product and one or more gateways, i.e. devices that can connect to the wifi bridging the gap between the connected devices and our smartphone, such as Living Now by BTicino.

“Will I have turned off the lights of the garden?” or “Have I left the heating on?” are common perplexities that a smart home silences with a single click: you can in fact remotely manage the lighting, to turn on and adjust the intensity of the lights of the house, the air conditioning of the rooms, to calibrate the temperature, optimizing energy consumption, or even your video door phone, to open the gate of the house to the courier even in your absence, directly from your smartphone.

All – or almost – what you can do in a home automation with a traditional technology, although, as we have said, with less possibility of customization.

Worthy of note, both for the wired home automation and for the smart solution, is also the economic factor, since saving in both cases is possible thanks to the management of current loads, keeping consumption under control. It is also possible to avoid overloads by leaving the home automation system the task of disconnecting the secondary devices to optimize power management. Oven, washing machine, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, hair dryer in operation at the same time will no longer be a problem.

Would you like all this? Whether you are oriented towards wired home automation or are more attracted to smart solutions, BTicino offers innovative products to create an intelligent home tailored to your desires.

What are you waiting for? Try it to believe.
